Banner for the webcomic, "Derailed," by Gabriella Balagna. Features, Herschel Hale, Toby Graham, and Kolina Easton.

Derailed is a comic written, drawn, and published by Gabriella Balagna. The story is a tiny bit of many genres: comedy, adventure, romance, and mystery. It focuses on themes of perseverance, self worth, family, and compassion. The adventure takes place in Seagate Village, a cold frigid, mountainous place full of resentful people. With some mention of tragedy and a few perilous scenes, this comic may not be for very young viewers.

Temperatures above freezing don’t exist in Seagate Village. But Toby can’t leave until he builds a railroad connecting it to the outside world.

Inspiration for Derailed

The plot and characters of Derailed took inspiration from a variety of sources. From the get-go, the author, Gabriella Balagna, knew she wanted to create a story that would inspire people and give them a positive outlook. That’s why she decided Derailed would supply readers a heartwarming message of hope.

Additionally, Gabriella’s favorite author, Lucy Maud Montgomery, helped give Gabriella a love for plots featuring conflict between young and old characters. That’s why, for instance, the struggle between Derailed’s, Toby Graham, and, Blair Easton, was developed.

Gabriella also took inspiration from the many cold, snowy winters she has experienced. She loves the beauty and fun of snow, but she knows it can also be annoying. Thus, she pulled from that understanding to create a man vs. nature conflict in Derailed.

Special Thanks from the Author

Gabriella is so grateful for the people that helped Derailed come together. She is thankful to her family for speedily giving feedback, beta-reading, and getting the project off the ground. Also, she wants to thank her online followers for supporting and sharing her work. Thirdly, Gabriella wants to thank her fellow creators for inspiring her. And most of all, Gabriella is thankful to the creator, her guiding light.
