About Gabriella Balagna
About Gabriella Balagna
Gabriella Balagna is an artist and creator of webcomics based in the United States. She was always crafty/artsy as a kid. But Gabriella did not get interested in drawing until her teenage years. First, starting way back in 2012 she decided to teach herself to draw. After that, in 2015, she discovered the world of webcomics. Soon after, everything changed, she worked harder and harder, honing her craft so that one day she could bring her own comics to fruition. However, comics aren’t Gabriella’s only passion. Consequently, you’ll also find some of her stand alone illustrations on this site.

Drawing Projects by Gabriella Balagna
The Plant Witch
Firstly, in 2017, Gabriella created a 25-illustration long story, The Plant Witch. Inspired by Jake Parker’s Inktober art challenge, it was drawn traditionally with ink and paper. To really practice relying on visuals rather than words, the comic has few words. However, the story still has much to say.
Sketchbook Slam
Secondly, in 2019, Gabriella completed a modified version of Holly Brown’s Sketchbook Slam Challenge. The goal of the challenge is to fill an oversized 600 page sketchbook in thirty days, a monumental task not for the faint of heart. Consequently, Gabriella modified the challenge to allow one year to fill the sketchbook in order to make it a more doable goal. You can watch her completed 600 page sketchbook tour online.
Derailed
Thirdly, in 2020, Gabriella started publishing her webcomic, Derailed. One comic already under her belt, with this story she decided to go a lot deeper into characters and world-building. For instance, each page of Derailed is full of life with detailed backgrounds, full color, and a complex storyline.
Kindred Not
Gabriella’s most recent project is her new webcomic, Kindred Not. Part of this project involved doing behind-the-scenes work. For example, writing a script, drawing model sheets, and making concept art. The process and tips learned along the way are documented on this website and on social media. After preparing a lot of backlog for the comic, it has now started releasing new episodes every other week to this website. The comic is going to run for multiple years. And eventually, it will be released as a printed book.
Gabriella’s Hobbies
Outside of drawing and making webcomics, Gabriella likes to spend her leisure time many ways. She likes to sew both crafts and utilitarian items, such as stuffed animals, lunch-boxes, pencil cases, pillows, and clothes. Gabriella also likes to make organizational items, such as drawer dividers, spice racks, and decorative storage boxes. Gabriella is always crafting something new, including dollhouses, wall decor, party decorations, ornaments, and portable watercolor kits.
Gabriella’s interests also include baking, cooking, and testing out new recipes. In the summer, she likes to go swimming, visit sand dunes, go hiking, go camping, and play disc golf. In the winter, Gabriella loves to ice skate on lakes, go sledding, and drink hot cocoa. Most of all, she loves spending time with her family, playing board games, creating plays, and making quality food.
Gabriella’s Favorites
Although she can be indecisive, there are a few things Gabriella definitely feels are her favorites. Firstly, her favorite cookie is chocolate chip, especially homemade ones. Secondly, her favorite color is red. That’s because when she was little she mistakenly believed you could never change your favorite color; so to remember this funny belief, she never has. Thirdly, Gabriella’s favorite book is Anne of Green Gables, as she loves stories that happen during “olden days.” Fourthly, Gabriella’s favorite band is Rend Collective. And finally, Gabriella’s favorite person is you, but shh, remember to keep it a secret!
