A Stirring Story

Alford is a bad place for families: parents and children are pitted against each other due to opposing political views; boys must leave home to join the draft as soon as they turn 18; and women are widowed by the war, struggling to raise children alone.

Not to mention, the Alfordian royal guards monitor all borders, only allowing travel between towns if you’ve got special permission. With such a tyrannical government, there are many reasons Alfordian citizens feel forced to flee their homeland.

But it’s not easy trying to break out with guards patrolling the lands. For these reasons, an unconventional group of citizens is formed, hoping to work together to escape Alford. But there’s something they desire even more so than safety and freedom, and that’s kindred – or in modern terms, family.

An Unconventional Cast

Amelie Dunald is just an average teenager longing for affection. To fill the void, she devotes her life to loyally serving her country, Alford. Unlike many, she feels blessed to call Alford her home.

But one day, Amelie finds out that her parents have committed treason against Alford. Naturally, she is in shock to learn that her own kin would betray the place she loves. On top of this, being of the same blood as her parents, and with the way the laws work, Amelie is now guilty by association. So she goes on the run to escape imprisonment.

But hiding from the guards is harder than you’d imagine. To avoid arrest, Amelie must team up with fellow citizens looking to escape the country: Kenneth, Caden, Ronan, and Mrs. MacFarlan. The fates and goals of these five characters become very intwined. Yet still, the bunch makes for an unconventional team, as their ages and values greatly vary. With many hardships lingering, can they put aside their differences to reach safety? Will any of them have a change of heart?

More About the Cast

A World Back in Time

Kindred Not takes place in Alford, a tyrannical, power-hungry country. Likewise, the turbulent lives of the characters are loosely based on life in WWII Europe. Thus, the comic’s aesthetic and character designs loosely take inspiration from the 1930s and 1940s.

The setting of Kindred Not is not just an afterthought. Rather, every background includes great detail and beauty. For instance, the characters go on an adventure through vast rolling hills and highlands inspired by European countrysides. Additionally, the settings include old villages, grand cities, and coastal towns. Furthermore, in the backgrounds, you’ll notice old timey charm, like classic cars, people riding horseback, and vintage furniture.

Specifically, the main characters of Kindred Not live in the southernmost part of Alford. Moreover, Alford and the surrounding countries all form a place called, The Greater Regions. Greedy to expand its territory, Alford has been at war with these surrounding countries. Unfortunately for the main characters, the only surrounding country they can escape to is Lahren, which is far, far to the north.

Get Ready for Kindred Not

Webcomic episodes of Kindred Not have now begun publishing as of January 02, 2024! The free comic will continue to release new episodes serially, every other Tuesday, at 7pm CST, here on gabriellabalagna.com. Each episode will show a few comic pages worth of comic panels to read, but in a mobile friendly scrolling format.

During the comic’s first year of publication, a grand total of 27 episodes will be released – one every other Tuesday! In fact, all of these episodes are already drawn and ready to publish. Indeed, that means readers are guaranteed a steady release of episodes during 2024. So get ready for fun times ahead! Moreover, the creator, Gabriella, is now working on drawing even more episodes, which will be released next year.
